TIME commissioned Ryan Pfluger to photograph Ishmael Beah, a former Sierra Leonian child solider. Beah received acclaim in 2007 for his memoir, A Long Way Gone, about child soldiers fighting in Sierra Leone’s civil war. This year, Beah is set to publish his first novel, Radiance of Tomorrow.
