Evan Kafka Shoots Swimmer Hind Hobeika for WIRED UK

Evan Kafka recently photographed swimmer and innovator Hind Hobeika for WIRED UK‘s February 2013 Issue. Hobeika has invented a sensor called Instabeat, which is the first waterproof monitor that attaches to a swimmer’s goggles and tracks his/her heart rate. Pre-orders for the device were launched in January of 2012, and Hobeika, who resides in Lebanon, has been spending the time since the launch taking part in different conferences and panels all over world. She has been featured in countless media outlets and has gained recognition worldwide. At the MIT Enterprise Forum Pan Arab Business Plan Competition she was selected, along with 50 other semi-finalists (out of 4500 applicants), to participate in a two-day workshop in Abu Dhabi.

Hobeika had just finished attending the Harvard Arab Conference in November when Evan had the opportunity to shoot portraits of her for WIRED UK. While the original plan was to photograph Hobeika in a swimming pool, Evan came up with an alternative idea. We got a chance to ask Evan to share a little bit more about the shoot, Hobeika, and the creative concept:

“Hind was in town for an event. I decided I would have more control and it would be easier to shoot in the studio than to try to get access to a pool in NYC. She was really nice and willing to work at getting the best image possible.  Between dunking her head in a bowl of water, I continuously sprayed her in the face with water. I like the water pooling inside her goggles.  It’s a privilege to shoot for Wired UK. Their subjects are fascinating innovators.”

It’s exciting to see such a young and passionate person create change. We are honored that Evan got to photograph this story. To find out more about Instabeat and how to order one, visit Hind Hobeika‘s website and check out WIRED UK’s February 2013 Issue. Ryan Pfluger Photographs Conor McBride Story for The New York Times Magazine

mcbridetearshseet

Ryan Pfluger was commissioned by the photo team at The New York Times Magazine to shoot portraits for their story “Can Forgiveness Play a Role in Social Justice?” The article covers the unique and controversial judicial process of the case of Conor McBride, a young twenty-two year old who shot and killed his fiancée, Ann Margaret Grosmaire, in March 2010.

4APF

This story is quite unusual because while Conor was originally charged with first degree murder, the families (particularly Ann’s family) have chosen to use an alternative judicial approach, known as restorative justice. The term refers to a concept in which the act of injustice is acknowledged and considered, and the focus is placed on making amends between all those involved, and coming to a universal agreement. Paul Tullis writes in the article, “Typically, a facilitator meets separately with the accused and the victim, and if both are willing to meet face to face without animosity and the offender is deemed willing and able to complete restitution, then the case shifts out of the adversarial legal system and into a parallel restorative-justice process.”

Ryan Pfluger - New York Times Magazine - Conor McBride

For the portrait shoot, Ryan flew to Florida to photograph Conor (who is currently in prison) and the families of Conor and Ann. Ryan had the opportunity to take photographs both at the prison and at the home of the Grosmaires. One of the shots that didn’t end up running was a cast made of Ann’s hand from when she was in the hospital before she died. While this was one of Ryan’s more unusual and emotion-filled stories, it’s projects like these that really grasp elements of humanity. The depth of emotion Ryan captured in these portraits are most particularly moving. Be sure to read the article here, and find out more about the story from the NYTM staff on their blog, The 6th Floor. To view more recent work from Ryan, visit the Glasshouse Assignment website.

40 Faces of Choice Campaign Features Photography from GHA Photographers and Friends

Yesterday marked the 40th Anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling, which protects women’s rights to abortion. To celebrate the anniversary and promote awareness and conversation on the importance of choice, GMMB partnered with HiFi Project and Framestore to create Choice Out Loud‘s video campaign, “40”. The campaign combines the work of 40 photographers from all over the U.S. to make an “International Portrait of Choice In America.” Each photographer was asked to shoot 60-80 frames of a millennial woman (born after 1980), using his or her own creative concept. Combining the portraits of all the photographers, the campaign wanted “to create one powerful, stop motion portrait of choice.” While many people distinctly remember the change that Roe v. Wade made, we are coming into a generation of women who did not live in a time where the rights to abortion were not an option. “40” aims to connect women of this generation with the awareness and importance of choice.

Glasshouse Assignment feels honored to know and represent several of the photographers and collaborators who worked on the campaign. Trevor Dixon, Ryan Schude, Martin Adolfsson, and many others were asked to contribute their creative insight to help concept and execute the campaign’s video. Below are stills that Trevor Dixon shot of studio manager and wife, Issa Dixon, who is a great & close friend of GHA. We love the shots that Trevor and all the photographers captured! Be sure to visit the campaign’s site to find out more about the organization and see behind-the-scenes video footage from several of the photographers, including Ryan Schude. Additionally, please take a moment to share the Choice Out Loud’s video campaign with friends and loved ones to promote the organization’s efforts
and vision.

Glasshouse Assignment

Happy Holidays from Glasshouse Assignment!

This has been a wonderful year for the Glasshouse family, and we’re thankful for all the opportunities and people we’ve gotten a chance to work with! To end the year, we’ve sent out wooden holiday cards to clients and friends and have decided to make a donation to Direct Relief International‘s Hurricane Sandy Fund in lieu of a holiday gift. The funds will go towards providing medical assistance
to those affected by the storm. We are so pleased with the look and wonderful woody scent of the beautiful cards made by Yvonne at Cardtorial.

To our friends, families, fans, clients, colleagues, business partners and especially all of our photographers: we wish for you a wonderful holiday and a very happy new year.

Support for a Photo Editor in Our Community By: Marissa Ericson

This past October, Rob Haggart published a post regarding Women’s Health Photo Editor Andrea Verdone and her family, who are putting up a strong fight against Leukemia in support of their daughter, Natalie. I was very touched by the article, both because it is a reminder of the need to support one another in the photo industry, and also because it shared the lives of an amazing family whom I have come to love and admire. It is because of Andrea (and also her family!) that I’m the person I am today, and a major reason why I began pursuing a career in the photo industry. The blog post made me realize that perhaps I could help raise awareness and support for Natalie by sharing my own experience of Andrea and her family.

As a junior in college, I reached out to Andrea for a midterm paper. The assignment was to write a profile on someone in the magazine field whose work I admired. While there are many magazines with compelling and distinguishing photography, my interest in holistic living led me to the beautiful photography in Women’s Health. When I read an online biography about Andrea and her path to becoming a photo editor, I knew I wanted to know more about her career experience and perspective. I sent her an email, and I can’t express in enough words how delighted I was when she replied shortly after and offered a portion of her time for an interview. Within the next few days, I researched and composed all the best questions I could think to ask.  And during our phone interview, she shared a 360° view of her life as a photo editor; how she got into the industry, what it’s like to work with photographers and other industry professionals, the process involved in producing photo shoots, how the final images are chosen, and what it’s like to be a working mom and career professional. Her enthusiasm, openness, and insight when sharing these details helped confirm that this was the industry and career path I wanted to pursue.

That initial interview turned into a continued correspondence, and ended up leading to a summer internship at Women’s Health. Throughout that time, Andrea continued to share her experience and wisdom with me. When planning photo shoots, I learned the importance of establishing relationships while remaining true to myself in the industry. On photo shoots, she taught me how to be a source of encouragement on set, as well as an aide to the photographer and crew. When selecting photos, she shared with me important elements of the editing process. Her words of advice certainly helped me to build a solid foundation and perspective in the industry. But her portrayal of wisdom didn’t stop there. As I worked for Andrea and started to learn more about her, I began to recognize her passion and love for her role as a mom. She spoke about the importance of being a role model to her daughters, of teaching them values of independence and strength. And I realized that she was also teaching me these values as well. Conversations like this made me recognize how much I admired Andrea for her ability to integrate her career and personal life.

Andrea’s youngest daughter, Natalie, at three years old, is currently fighting Leukemia. Because of the 24-hour coverage needed to oversee Natalie’s health, Andrea has needed to temporarily leave her position at Women’s Health. While she is dearly missed at the magazine, Andrea, along with her husband Dan, and daughter Hannah, are Natalie’s greatest supporters, and it has been a humbling and amazing experience to watch their family take a great stand against cancer. In the meantime, this is a time when we can offer encouragement and support. A website has been developed, where updates are posted and support can be shared through well wishes and donations.

I am so grateful for the experience and opportunities that Andrea has given me. When she spoke to me during our first interview, she said that she was happy to share her time with me because she believed in “Paying it Forward.” Ever since she paid it forward to me, I vowed that I would always strive to do the same for others. Thank you Andrea, for your faithfulness to your family and to our photo industry. From all of us at Glasshouse Assignment, and everyone in the industry, we wish you and your family strength, courage, serenity, and love.

Evan Kafka Shoots Nina Tandon for WIRED UK

The New Yorkers

Screen Shot 2012-12-04 at 5.53.24 PM

Glasshouse stock contributor, Robert Herman, is looking for support to fund the production of his new photography book, The New Yorkers.

The New Yorkers is a color photography book of my New York City street pictures, shot on Kodachrome, from the late 70’s – 2000.

To complete The New Yorkers, I plan to print a first edition of 1000 copies. I hope to raise $14,000 to cover the costs of printing and shipping the 1000 copies to New York City.

Screen Shot 2012-12-04 at 5.55.10 PM

It will be a 128 page 8 1/2 x 11″ hardcover book with 100 color images. The images have already been drum scanned for the finest quality reproduction. The award winning book designer, Patricia Fabricant, who has done books for Aperture and Alex Webb and Chuck Close is currently putting the finishing touches on the final layout.

Evan Kafka’s Portrait of Sudhir Venkatesh Featured in The New York Times Sunday Paper

Evan Kafka‘s portrait of Sudhir Venkatesh was featured on the front page of the Metropolitan Section in The New York Times Sunday Paper. Venkatesh, a sociology professor at Columbia University, and author of best selling book, “Gang Leader for a Day: A Rogue Sociologist Takes to the Streets,” is widely known and celebrated for his research on gangs and prostitution. The NYT article investigates Venkatesh and recent controversy involving the professor, and provides an interesting perspective on what a career in the public eye can yield. We love the photographs that Evan captured of Sudhir Venkatesh, which were originally commissioned by Forbes Magazine for the story “The Other Chicago School”. Trevor Dixon Shoots Campbell’s Go Soup Campaign for DDW

Campbell’s Soup Co. recently launched a new product line, Campbell’s Go Soups, and Trevor Dixon shot portraits for the packaging. The product is different from anything the company has previously created, as the soups are packaged in plastic pouches and sold in a variety of interesting product flavors, like “Moroccan Style Chicken with Chickpeas” and “Creamy Red Pepper with Smoked Gouda.” Dixon Photography and Campbell’s have had a long withstanding relationship, so this new venture for Campbell’s was an equally exciting project for Trevor and his team. Trevor and Campbell’s teamed up with the San Francisco-based agency Deutsch Design Works to execute the creative vision for the campaign, which involved shooting black and white portraits that would compliment the bursts of color designed for the packaging design. Trevor contributed beautiful and dynamic lighting to the B&W portraits, and captured great expressions for the campaign. We love the outcome of this new campaign, and found out more about the shoot’s production aspects by interviewing Issa Dixon, Trevor’s wife and the Studio Manager & Producer for Dixon Studios. Issa has been working as studio manager for Dixon Photography for twelve years, and previously worked in bookings within the music industry.

Glasshouse Assignment (GHA): How did you begin studio managing and producing for Trevor?
Issa: We met 12 years ago while working for our friends at Philadelphia Magazine.

GHA: As both wife & studio manager for Trevor, you hold multiple roles that I’m sure make for an interesting relationship. Can you describe what it’s like working with Trevor?
Issa: It’s great. Lots of picture talk at the dinner table but we’ve learned to balance.

GHA: How was the Campbell’s Go Soup Shoot initiated? Had Trevor worked with the client or agency before?
Issa: We’ve been working with Campbell’s and their Design Manager, Chip Heim, for a couple of years. It was the first time we worked with the Deutsch Design Works team (DDW), who are based out of San Francisco. They made it very easy for us to interpret the creative for this project.

GHA: How much prep time did you have for the shoot?
Issa: We had a little over a month from the first creative call. Things moved quickly. We all had a very definite plan of where and what we were looking for.

GHA: How many crew members did you hire for this shoot?
Issa: The shoot involved 14 people from our team.

GHA: Can you describe all the tasks that went into ensuring a successful shoot?
Issa: We needed to cast for seven models. When casting for this many roles, it is really important to get to know the personalities. It was a very entertaining crew. Comfort was priority. Each model was asked to give us multiple expressions. Making everyone feel comfortable enough to make quirky facial expression for hours was very important. Trevor and I are pretty down to earth, so lots of good music, chocolate, and jokes on set were a must.

GHA: Were there any last minute challenges that you had to work through?
Issa: We added an additional character on the day of the shoot. It really wasn’t a hurdle. I was able to call in an old friend who I thought would be perfect, and he ended up being a favorite.

GHA: As a producer, you are involved in the entire process of a shoot: the prep work, the photo shoot, and the post work. Is there a favorite part for you? If so, why?
Issa: For this one it was definitely finding the talent. But it really depends on the project. I love finding beautiful locations for fashion projects.

GHA: Is there anything you would’ve done differently about this shoot?
Issa: Nope, it was a home run.

GHA: With the creation of new products, there is always a bit of uncertainty as to whether or not the final product will be approved and successfully launched. How did it feel to find out that the Campbell’s Go Soup campaign would be released?
Issa: We were thrilled! We were happy for everyone involved and were so excited to see it actually hit the shelves.

GHA: In your twelve years as Trevor’s studio manager and producer, what is the biggest thing you’ve learned as a producer?
Issa: Yep, been producing for my man for 12 years. EVERYTHING is a learning curve when balancing a relationship and a business. Fortunately we work very well together. I can almost read his mind at this point.

Evan Kafka Shoots Missy Cummings for WIRED UK

WIRED UK commissioned Evan Kafka to travel to Boston to shoot Missy Cummings, an Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. Cummings, who was a U.S. Navy pilot for 11 years, is now working on developing a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) that can be controlled by an iPhone. This sort of technology would allow for a more accessible way to send aid and materials to soldiers and military personnel in unpredictable situations. The story was published in WIRED UK’s December issue. Professor Cummings’ research can also be seen on this video from a WIRED Business Conference last spring, and on the MIT website. Adam Taylor teamed up with DDB Melbourne to shoot a campaign for Origin Energy. The campaign promotes “Origin Smart“, which is an online program for Origin customers that shows them how much they’re spending on electricity every day, by the hour. The creative concept for the campaign was to shoot various situations that require energy in such a way that the photograph shows a ‘graph’ (such as bar, pie and line graphs), indicating the amount of the energy used for that particular device.

Shanghai “A Double Life” Art Exhibition Features Motion by Adam Taylor

Adam Taylor‘s video “After the Parade,” will be featured at the second Shanghai “A Double Life” Art Exhibition, beginning Saturday, November 17th – Sunday, December 2, 2012. The exhibit seeks to share the personal work of global artists that come from a variety of creative fields, such as photography, graphic design, and advertising. When asked to share more about his video, Adam replied that it confronts the question: “What do our costumes and masks reveal about us? Are we the mask or are we the wearer of the mask?”

Curated by Mido Xu from WeLoveAd.com, the “A Double Life” Art Exhibit promotes the question and idea: “What is commercial? What is art? There is no longer distinguishable line here.” We are so excited to have Adam’s work featured among the work of many talented creative professionals!
