Judy Blume‘s Then Again, Maybe I Won’t

This classic still has its same old charm, but is sporting a new cover photo by Elisabet Zeilon.  Blume has sold over 75 million copies of her books and is known in the literary world for her young adult novels that center around the struggles of growing up.  Then Again, Maybe I Won’t does not disappoint as it deals with Tony, a coming of age teen who has a lot of questions about the changes he is going through.

Adam Taylor Shoots James “The Missle” Magnussen for Samsung Olympic Partner Campaign

Australian swimmer James “The Missle” Magnussen is a favored Olympic hopeful this year at the 2012 London Olympics. The 6’5”, 22-year-old swimmer rose to international attention when he won the 100m freestyle at the World Championships in Shanghai last year. Continuing full stride, he went on to set the fourth fastest time in history, with a time of 47.10 seconds at the 2012 Olympic Trials. Beginning semifinals today, he will race the same race that brought him international attention, except now he is fighting for an Olympic Gold Medal (something an Australian hasn’t won since 1968).

Earlier this Spring, with the 2012 London Olympics quickly approaching and gaining hype, Glasshouse Assignment photographer Adam Taylor was offered the exciting opportunity to shoot Magnussen for a Samsung Olympic Partner ad campaign. The shoot was a success, and an outdoor print of the campaign is now featured in incredible size, scaling the entire front side of the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney.

While the massive ad displays a strong presence in itself, Adam Taylor’s ability to capture the intensity, passion, and determination of the young swimmer is eye-catching and dynamic. And speaking about both Magnussen and campaign, Taylor portrayed just as much enthusiasm. “We’d swim for James!” Taylor stated.

With the Men’s 100m freestyle finals beginning today and running through tomorrow (Magnussen made it through the first round this morning, and will swim in semifinals this afternoon), we thought it would be a great opportunity to interview Taylor about his experience of of the campaign and shooting with the Olympic hopeful.

GHA: How did this campaign come about?
AT: The art buyer from Leo Burnett reached out to me, and then I had conversations with the creatives – Art directors Justin Carew and Sharon Edmondston– they were wonderfully talented and insightful.

GHA: What was the most challenging aspect of the shoot?
AT: Getting what we wanted to achieve within a very limited time frame. We were working alongside the making of the TVC and there were time restraints.

GHA: What was something interesting you found out about James Magnussen?
AT: He trains on a predominantly protein diet…eggs, meat, fish, chicken.

GHA: Where did the shoot take place?
AT: At Sydney Aquatic Centre

GHA: What was the creative idea behind the photo shoot?
AT: To create a dynamic, powerful and defined portrait of James Magnussen as he goes into the 2012 Olympic Games.

GHA: Was there anything else that particularly stood out to you about this shoot?
James’s physique, and how the women on set appreciated it…:-)

While Magnussen and his Australian teammates unexpectedly lost in the Men’s 400m Relay last Sunday, many are hopeful that he will be able to perform different results in the individual Men’s 100m freestyle finals, beginning today and running through tomorrow. With “the missle’s” renowned backend speed, I wouldn’t be surprised if Magnussen is able to make a grand comeback.

Ryan Pfluger Shoots Zoe Kazan for TIME Magazine

To celebrate today’s opening of Ruby Sparks, a romantic comedy by actress and writer Zoe Kazan, we asked GHA Photographer Ryan Pfluger to share with us some insights about his recent work with the star, which was featured in last week’s issue of TIME Magazine (Issue 7/30/2012). The movie, quoted as “a sleek, beautifully written and acted romantic comedy” by The New York Times writer Stephen Holden, is about a writer who dreams up his perfect lover. His dream girl becomes a real human being, and the story follows them as their relationship evolves.

Ryan Pfluger’s photographic style, which has a subtle edginess to it, and one that seems to allow the viewer to really connect with the subject, seems to compliment the style of both Ruby Sparks and the leading actress herself. Here’s what Ryan had to say about the shoot:

What inspired your lighting and composition for this work?

The shoot took place at the TIME offices in their on-site studio. I have a few different studio lighting set-ups that are easy for me to switch out, and since we needed to do two set-ups I needed to do something that was easy to move around.  The yellow/orange background was the only thing I really did differently.  Not a color I usually like to work with because it can be very overpowering. However it was for a summer issue and I wanted to do something that was light and fit the mood of her movie.

Who was involved set? Time Photo Editor Marie Tobias; Zoe’s younger sister, Maya Kazan; my assistant, Eric Helgas; and PR.

What is it like to shoot celebrity portraits?

Doing celebrity portraits can be extremely jarring sometimes.  The time constraints are often tight and the talent is often going from one appointment to the next.  Zoe was very easy to work with and very sweet.

In addition to your portraits and commissioned work, are there any personal projects you’re currently working on?

Currently I’m working on a project called Reunion.  I’m going back and photographing as many people as I can from my graduating high-school class as well as photographing objects and spaces from that time.

To keep up with Ryan’s most recent work, follow his tumblr, Briefly, Ryan Pfluger, where he shares photographs, recent news, and answers followers’ questions.

Contributing Photographer Robert Herman’s work shown at Vinatta Project

Glasshouse Stock Photographer Robert Herman, specializing in non-formal portraits, atmospheric and grainy space photography, as well as video, will be showing an exclusive exhibition at the Vinatta Project . Born in Brooklyn, Robert is a native to NY, who came to love film and photography from growing up around cinemas that his parents owned. First going to college at New York University Film School, Tisch School of the Arts, he soon discovered the world of still photographs, and later attended School of Visual Arts for Professional Studies in Digital Photography. Robert’s use of vivid colors, light, and composition give his photographs emotion, as well as a personal connection to the content pictured.

Contributing Photographer Kat Kiernan’s work displayed in D.C.

Contributing Glasshouse stock photographer Kat Kiernan, who graduated in 2011 from The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, will be displaying her exhibition “RAW: Natural Born Artists” In Washington D.C. in August. Images from her collection “Between Earth and Water“, lend a dark yet gentle hand to the world of black and white photography. With high contrast, high ISO’s, and dark vignetting, her images portray a different side of the world that we’ve become so accustomed to. Her work shows varying speeds of nature, from swift seagulls to the thousands of years it takes to create rock formations. Dedicated to the art of storytelling, her emotional images give us a view to the darker side of nature, while still preserving the quaint and soft side of the world we know. With several awards and exhibitions under her belt, it’s clearly stated that Kat’s photography is eye-catching, and that the public enjoys seeing her portrayal of black and white.

Evan Kafka for Ogilvy & Mather and Huggies

It’s that all-too-familiar moment when you are making eye contact with a baby and he/she lets you in on a little secret: they’re the ones who are really in control of the situation.

In their third campaign with Glasshouse photographer Evan KafkaOgilvy & Mather commissioned the photographer to capture these types of unforgettable moments for Huggies. It was a genius creative idea that Evan Kafka was quickly on board with. With the help of a large production team, including Ogilvy & Mather’s creative department, Set Designer Peter Gargliano, Wardrobe Stylist Ellen Silverstein, Diaper Stylist Heidi Samuda, Baby Wrangler Bethany Pettigrew and many others, the envisioned idea emerged into final ads that are brilliant, humorous, and relatable. While Evan is well known as a renowned baby photographer, this campaign was a new and exciting venture for the photographer. In a recent interview, Evan shared the challenges and factors he faced.

“This was the 2nd Dad’s campaign shoot with Huggies, and the first that incorporated environment factors. One of the challenges was trying to keep the background from competing with the subjects. I shot everything with aperture wide open to make the background out of focus. I think it works really well, but it’s also kind of risky because the camera can easily go out of focus.”

Because this was a campaign involving multiple scenarios (five scenes were shot and four were selected as final images), the production team had to bring on a large amount of talent and crew members. Led by Producer Jake Mills, the production team proved to be hardworking and effective. Evan spoke about how helpful a large crew can be, and how he manages the set as a photographer.

“As the photographer, I have to manage between the baby’s mood, the wrangler being in and out of frame, the diaper stylist (and yes, diaper stylists really do make a difference—the diapers definitely look neater!), any wardrobe changes, the clients, etc.  For this shoot, I was about 20-30ft away from the baby and talent, in which case, I try to gain attention by making loud noises—quacking, barking, or banging my wedding ring are my usuals to get the baby’s attention.”

For Evan, eye contact can be one of the most compelling elements of a photograph. Especially in this series, where the environment plays a large role in the image. That might be why one of his favorite shots from the series is the “dirty diaper” photograph, where the father is looking away, for relief from the smell, and the baby is looking straight on at the camera.

“Eye contact in an environment like this makes it a little more ironic—it’s kind of like the kid’s giving you a wink, like they know what’s going on, at the father’s expense.”

Evan really enjoyed collaborating with Huggies and O & M Agency, and commended the creative team, led by Ogilvy & Mather Art Director Vince Soliven, Creative Directors Chris Turner and David Metcalf, and Senior Art Buyer Susan Hatten for having a specific vision.

“In a shoot with lots of factors and options, having an art director who is really good about making decisions about environment and styling, and committing to their decisions, is important.  Otherwise, you lose what’s most important, which is fresh faces.”

I definitely think these final ad images are full of fresh faces, and I look forward to see the next advertisement, due out later this year!

Evan Kafka, Gerber’s Facebook Favorite

In recent news, photographer Evan Kafka has been generating traffic on Gerber’s Facebook page. As a renowned baby photographer, Evan Kafka has worked with DraftFCB to contribute to several of Gerber’s ad campaigns. Now, Evan has teamed up with Publicis Consultants and Gerber to be the new spokesperson for an upcoming launch. Evan is sharing his photography experience with Gerber parents this month by offering top tips for photographing children. The posts began on Tuesday, July 3rd, and will continue rolling out throughout the month, as Gerber gets ready to launch the return of The Gerber Generation Photo Search. The contest, a search for the new face for their upcoming ad campaign, will start on Monday, July 16th.  Parents and Gerber fans alike have reacted with great enthusiasm as the tips have been posted. We look forward to Evan’s upcoming tips and seeing the photos that the Gerber parents enter in The Gerber Generation Photo Search!

Recent Tips:

Evan’s Photo Tip #1: Plan a photo shoot at home. Set aside a few hours to photograph your child and set yourself up for success by choosing a place and time that works best with their daily routine.

Evan’s Photo Tip #2: Get in close! Fill as much of the frame of your shot with your child as possible. Don’t just rely on your camera’s zoom or photo cropping which may reduce the image quality.

Evan’s Photo Tip #3: Less is more. Your child should always be the star of your shot. Avoid loud patterns, props or accessories that can be distracting. Let your child’s natural emotion and expression engage your audience.

Photoville Launches at Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park was swarmed with photo enthusiasts during the last two weekends in June, as the park launched Photoville, an exhibition featuring over 30 shipping containers that displayed work from international photographers. Exhibits included: Photographer Sim Chi Yina’s documentary photographs of the underground homes of Beijing migrant workers; an interactive art installation of “camera flowers” by Brazilian Artist André Feliciano; and Photographer Alexandros Lambrovassilis’ work documenting the declining state of the former international airport of Athens.

Glasshouse Assignment is also excited to announce Photographer Ryan Schude’s work in the exhibit, “Phoot Camp 2012”. The exhibit displayed the work of 35 selected photographers who were invited to attend and collaborate with one another at a four-day photo retreat in upstate New York.  Ryan had the exciting opportunity to photograph fellow photographers in “camp action”. Other favorite features of Photoville included workshops, lectures, and “The Fence,” which presented submitted photographs from photographers of all experience levels on gated fences. The photos addressed the essence of “community.” We loved getting to see the exciting work and collaborations of so many talented artists, and look forward to the future editions of Photoville.

Adam Taylor Shoots Underwater Schweppes Campaign with MK Bergen

Glasshouse photographer Adam Taylor recently shot a gorgeous campaign for Schweppes through MK Bergen. MK approached us to have Adam shoot this campaign based on his past underwater experience, technical lighting skills and creative vision. After a long day in a New Jersey diving pool, we present you with the three final ads. Adam Taylor teamed up with creative director, Armando Zuniga, of MK Agency to realize the new Schweppes “Your Taste” campaign. Shot in a dive tank with a team of skilled underwater divers and an experienced underwater model, the team created gorgeous imagery. In Adam’s words, “Technically and creatively challenging, the shoot utilized both underwater and above water lighting to craft the hauntingly beautiful atmosphere within the pool.” The concept drew on all of Adam’s extensive underwater experience in directing the model to interact with the bubbles as they were being created by the team of divers beneath her.
