Evan Kafka Shoots Corning Glass for Forbes

EvanKafka1308200931_Blog-2

Evan Kafka was commissioned by Forbes to photograph Corning Inc., a 162-year-old company that has created glass for innovators including Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs.

“Corning introduced the new, tougher formulation this year as Gorilla Glass 3, the latest innovation in a product line that has gone from zero to $1 billion in the five years after the iPhone debuted” according to Forbes.

EvanKafka1308201455_Blog-2

“It was a busy day, beginning with a really cool shot of process technicians pouring molten glass fresh out of a super hot furnace,” Evan said. “Followed by some still life shots of some molten glass moments after being poured into a mold, their non-glare glass, and Corning’s bendable Willow glass.”

Evan also photographed portraits of CEO Wendell Weeks and Dr. Jeffrey Evenson, SVP and Operations Chief of Staff.

Because of the successes of the iPhone and Gorilla Glass, Forbes writes, “Executives from just about every major consumer electronics company in the world have visited within the last 18 months.”

Meet Colonel Meow

0022

The Cat with the Longest Fur.”

Yes, that title does exist. To compete for the Guinness World Record title, three independent veterinarians measured 10 strands of cat fur to determine an average length, then submitted to Guinness for reviewal. Colonel Meow, a two-year-old Himalayan-Persian cross-breed, had an average of 9 inches per hair. That’s some thick fur!

Ryan Schude was commissioned by Guinness World Records to photograph Colonel Meow in his West Hollywood home for their 2014 Edition, which hits shelves Sept. 14.

File Naming Basics

Over the years I’ve looked through thousands and thousands of images by many different photographers. Some are organized to every meticulous detail; others, I can’t figure out when or who the photograph was made for. Keeping track of everything can be a challenge, but for those of us who don’t naturally tick toward systemization, this post breaks file naming down to an easy method for better photo archiving.

aahhhfiles

The method was taught by revered professor Rita Reed when I studied photojournalism at the University of Missouri. She stressed file naming so much that if we didn’t do it correctly, we’d get a lower grade on our assignments. Because of that sort of hard-lined push, I still name my photographs in the same system (thanks, Rita!).

Batch renaming is the first thing I do after importing the photos—I don’t even look at the images until they’re renamed. Luckily, it’s a very simple task that can be done in most any photo handling program (some programs will even let you change the file name on import). My go-to is PhotoMechanic, but Adobe Bridge, Lightroom and CaptureOne can all do it too.

The date should be the first notation in the filename, with the four-digit year first. Today for example, would be 20130903. Putting the year first makes it much easier to separate shoots when you start pulling together images from different years.

Separated with an underscore, the other notations should be the photographer’s name, a reference to the job and the file number. Feel free to choose the order of which comes first. I have my last name, the job reference and the file number as a habit, ex: 20130903_ludeke_nymag_0013.XXX. The way you reference the job is up to you — some people just put the company, others have job numbers that are referenced in the invoice, others reference the job itself — but whatever you choose, try to keep everything consistent. It will save you from future headaches.

bridge_filerename

Hopefully these tips will make organization and archiving easier. With a consistency for all of your photographs, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Do you have any different tips for file naming? We’d love to hear them!

Ryan Schude Talks Them & Theirs Series

Ryan Schude - Them & Theirs

Zack Stratis and his 1976 Mercedes 300D. Glendale, California. August, 2013.

In what originally was a photo series about vanity license plates, Ryan Schude began making environmental portraits of different people and their cars, now called “Them & Theirs.”

Ryan typically photographs his friends, “but I also put notes on people’s cars I see parked asking them if they are willing to participate,” he said. “I get a fair amount of referrals as well.”

Ryan Schude - Them & Theirs

Forrest Kahlil Perrine and his 1983 Toyota Pickup. Downtown, Los Angeles. August, 2013. Mural and hand prop by Forrest.

“The idea with Forrest was to shoot him in front of the mural he had already painted of the hands,” Ryan said. “We thought it would be cool to have a 3D version as a prop and so he built that giant hand for the shoot.”

Ryan Schude - Them & Theirs

Jimmy Marble and his 1991 Jeep Cherokee. Elysian Valley, Los Angeles. March, 2013.

“Jimmy’s was based around a photo he showed me of a giant tarp hanging from a building that he thought would make a cool location. I liked the idea but the location wasn’t right and so I found a different spot I had been wanting to shoot for a long time and hung a tarp there instead,” Ryan said. “The triangle shape was sheerly a visual design at first but there is a nice coincidence that the keyboard shortcut Alt-J (for Jimmy) makes the same triangle shape.”

Know anyone in L.A. who has an interesting looking car? Send us a note and we’ll put you in touch with Ryan!

Ryan Pfluger Photographs Nick Gruber

Ryan Pfluger was hired by New York Magazine to photograph portraits of Nick Gruber, Calvin Klein’s ex-lover. After a brainstorming session with Photo Director Jody Quon, the two decided on an homage to the “Obsession” campaigns featuring Kate Moss. Ryan said he also intended on “making a really honest portrait of him that was as natural as possible.” We think Ryan’s intimate style of photographing definitely achieved those goals.

Ryan Schude’s Promo Photographs for “Medora”

Ryan Schude was asked to make some promotional photographs for Medora, a documentary about a small-town, high school basketball team in Medora, Indiana, from directors Davy Rothbart and Andrew Cohn.

Like many rural communities in America, Medora has lost much of its factories, farms and population, which has dwindled to around 500 people.

“[The film] was an interesting commentary on the disappearance of small towns in America,” Ryan said. “Medora is fighting to keep the school from consolidation with other larger schools since many people in the town feel that once the school is gone, the town will inevitably disappear too.”

robbietruck1140low

Robby Armstrong, with his 1999 Chevy Silverado. Medora, Indiana.

gilbertcar1140low

Officer Justin Gilbert and his Ford Crown Victoria. Bedford, Indiana.

Medora follows the down-but-not-out Medora Hornets varsity basketball team over the course of the 2011 season, capturing the players’ stories both on and off the court. The Hornets were riding a brutal losing streak when we arrived, and the team’s struggle to compete bears eerie resonances with the town’s fight for survival.

Medora is an in-depth, deeply personal look at small-town life, a thrilling, underdog basketball story, and an inspiring tale of a community refusing to give up hope despite the brutal odds stacked against them. On a grander scale, it’s a film about America, and the thousands of small towns across the country facing the same fight. As one towns-person told us, “Once we lose these small towns, we can’t get them back.”

Kang Kim’s Ice Cream Challenge

Photographing bite-sized ice cream isn’t easy. Studios can’t keep the temperatures like a freezer — so it melts pretty quickly and creates a messy shoot.

KK-RD-Bites_004

Sometimes food stylists will try to freeze the ice cream further using dry ice. Unfortunately that can elicit a freezer-burn look, which isn’t very appetizing.

KK-RD-Bites_001

So Kang Kim and his stylist scrapped that idea and worked quickly to make the tiny ice cream sandwich have a balance of slightly messy but not too unappetizing. I can hear my stomach grumbling in excitement.

 1006131_10151434958145810_1096346101_n

Translated from German: The Power of the Soul Language: Global Mediumship

In his new book Martin Zoller wants to inspire readers to interpret their own soul language better. He explains that every soul sends out signals to better perceive the unconscious and be prepared for life events. From experiences of his own daily work, Martin Zoller wants to show how mediumship and clairvoyance can be effectively used in everyday life.

This book can also be understood as a bridge between the physical world and the human subtle reality, between different continents and their values, and between different faiths across the globe.

 600318_10151438732750810_278974565_n

Translated from German:  Poets, Thinkers, School Failures

Jörg Dräger argues that the modern German education system has failed due to its dependence on traditional values and ignorance to the illiteracy of many of its people. “One in five young people in Germany cannot read, write, or count… in no other industrial country in the academic success of a child is so dependent on origin and educational level of parents like us.” Through his book, Dräger emphasizes the dire need for educational reform and proposes viable ways in which to do so.

Stock Contributor Elisabet Zeilon Selected for Judy Blume Book Cover

Glasshouse Images stock contributor Elisabet Zeilon has been featured on the cover of Judy Blume’s short novel, Then Again, Maybe I Won’t.

Elisabet Zeilon_Judy Blume

Judy Blume is an internationally renowned bestselling children’s author who has won over ninety literary awards through the span of her career, including three lifetime achievement awards. She began writing children’s books when her own children entered preschool in 1969 and is known in the literary world for her young adult novels that center around the struggles of growing up. She has since written twenty-nine novels that have sold over 82 million copies and have been translated into thirty-one languages around the world. Blume has been recognized as one of the most influential authors of the past century and is a longtime advocate of intellectual freedom, anti-censorship, and the education of children and teens.

On June 7, 2013 her 1981 novel Tiger Eyes was adapted for the big screen and released in theaters throughout the U.S., marking a huge milestone in Blume’s career.

Swedish photographer Elisabet Zeilon has been shooting throughout the United States, UK, and Sweden since 1982. Her images blur the line between fantasy and reality, giving a dream-like quality to the minute details of everyday life.

Her dark, surrealistic photographs have gained the attention of clients such as Apple, American Express, Tampax, Pharmacia, Shell Oil, Stanford University, Exxon, Seagram, Los Angeles Times, Sunday Times, Washington Post, SAS, Time/Life, MacWorld, Chronicle Books, San Francisco Aids Foundation, New York Aids Foundation, Authorware,  Los Angeles Cancer Institute, Random House, Decca Records, Ecophone,  Cartier,  Swedish Railroad sJ,  ACT Theatre, Harper Collins, Prisma, New Scientist, MCI, Los Angeles Olympics, Harvard university, and MiLLESGÅRDEN. The Power of Referral: Ryan Schude’s Promos for Redneck Island

It’s important to keep good working relationships.

Through the referral of a retoucher he worked with previously, Ryan Schude received a call from Country Music Television to photograph the promotional images for season 3 of Redneck Island.

Ryan found a bit of more fortune when he realized that another photographer and friend, Lauren Randolph, was also hired for the shoot. The two had collaborated in the past, which made a comfortable environment for photographing.

“Working with another photographer, you take their opinions differently,” Ryan said. He explained that being around someone with similar skills helped push him to make better photos and made a long 12-hour day go by easier.

When shooting Steve Austin, Ryan “was pleasantly surprised” with how nice the professional wrestler was, especially when he offered them more of his time than needed for the shoot.

Ryan said CMT was “very happy” after the shoot. And so was Ryan; he enjoyed photographing for CMT. His professional working style paid off: a smoothly run shoot with happy clients.

Glasshouse Images Contributor Heather Walsh Featured on Cover of Susanne Alleyn’s Latest Novel

An image by Glasshouse Images stock contributor Heather Walsh is featured on the cover of bestselling author Susanne Alleyn’s new book, The Cavalier of the Apocalypse.

HeatherWalsh_Cavalier

Born in Munich, Germany, Sussanne Alleyn grew up in Massachusetts and earned a B.F.A. in theater from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She has currently written five historical mystery novels and recently released Medieval Underpants and Other Blunders, a nonfiction writer’s guide to avoiding errors and anachronisms in historical fiction.

Following two mystery novels set in the aftermath of the French Revolution, Game of Patience (2006) and A Treasury of Regrets (2007), The Cavalier of the Apocalypse reveals the riveting story of the series sleuth, Aristide Ravel, as he becomes as detective in 1786 France. The Historical Novels Review has said that The Cavalier of the Apocalypse “combines the best in history and mystery.”

Heather Walsh began her artistic career as a painter in New Mexico, but soon found her true passion in photography and followed her dream to Long Island, NY, where she currently lives. Walsh creates images that are genuine and intimate statements about the people and places she photographs, revealing the shared humanity of the intimate relationships between people in everyday life. She is a regular contributor to Newsday and is the producer of SalaamGarage: Local NYC Aging Out of Foster Care Project. She has photographed for editorial, advertising, non-profit and publishing clients such as Hamptons Magazine, Edible Manhattan magazine and W. W. Norton & Co. and has showcased in prominent locations such as the National Arts Club and Lincoln Center. You can follow her photographic journey on her website and twitter.

Spencer Jones’ Stiletto Image Gets Picked Up by Sylvia Day

Never underestimate the power of test shooting for potential clients.

Spencer Jones learned this the fun way when he recently shot a woman’s stiletto while testing for still life. Not only did he land the gig, but the same image was later picked up as a cover image by internationally acclaimed author Sylvia Day, for her latest best-seller, Bared To You (click and scroll). Released in 2012, Bared To You has been published in at least a dozen languages, and confidently climbed to #4 on Amazon’s top 10 best-selling books of 2012.

When asked what he did to add greater impact to his image, Spencer described his process of elongating the stiletto heel (by at least a half an inch) and punching up the richness of the gold tip, all while “maintaining the rest of the image in black and white to help reduce any color casting.”

Please scroll to view this now famous book cover, as shown in multiple languages.

Dorsey McGlone Russell, Co-Founder and CEO of SmartSkin, helped create this beauty product line when she “grew tired of paying premium prices for luxury brands” and “really couldn’t tell how or why they would work.” As an answer to this predicament, SmartSkin dedicates itself to informing the public about the ingredients in their products. One way they accomplish this is through listing the percentages of active ingredients, which is difficult to decipher with many other beauty product manufacturers.

The success of the photo shoot didn’t escape Dorsey’s attention either. She told us that “Spencer was an absolute pleasure to work with–professional, detail-oriented, and fun. He spent more time on my project than expected, but did so happily because he wanted to get the shoot right. I’m extremely pleased with the results. Thanks Spencer!”
