Celebrating International Women’s Day Through Photography: Blogs and Publications We’re Following

March 8th is acknowledged as International Women’s Day, and several photo blogs and publications are celebrating the holiday by sharing great work women are doing all over the world. Here’s a roundup of some of the Glasshouse favorites that you should definitely check out. If you’ve come across any great projects, articles, or great women in photography or art, let us know in our comments section — we’d love to share it on the GHA Facebook and Twitter!

SILVER: A State of Mind“: San Francisco-based Photographer Vicki Topaz has released a DVD of her portrait series, “SILVER: A State of Mind,” in celebration of International Women’s Day. Topaz’s portrait series is about women and aging, and seeks to inspire conversation and discussion. The DVD pairs the portraits with spoken interview excerpts from several of the subjects, along with music by jazz vocalist Wesla Whitfield (who is also featured in the series).  To read more about the DVD and series, check out PRWeb’s article.

National Geographic‘s Explorers Journal Blog: Today the blog is celebrating IWD by sharing photographs of National Geographic Women Explorers who’ve shared great words & insight. One of the women, Kelsey Wilson, is a young explorer who has started a project that provides cameras to Omani women artisans to inspire them through photography.

Lens Culture’s weblog is sharing 55 Female Photographers who are “making the world a better place. ”

The Huffington Post posted photographs of work from 10 Female Artists to Watch in 2013. While we work specifically in the photography industry, it’s wonderful to see other creative ways women are making their mark!

Additionally, the Glasshouse Agents look back on recent stories and campaigns that GHA photographers have worked on that highlight inspirational women. Ryan Pfluger has recently photographed Playwright Amy Herzog, Coca-Cola President for North America, Katie Bayne, and United Nations Foundation VP for Global Partnerships, Elizabeth Mckee Gore.

For WIRED UK, Evan Kafka has had the opportunity to photograph Scientist & Swimmer Hind Hobeika, MIT Professor Rosalind Picard, and Electrical and Biomedical Engineer Nina Tandon.

We were honored to have Glasshouse photographers Ryan Schude and Trevor Dixon participate in gmmb‘s recent campaign, 40 Faces of Choice, for Choice Out Loud. For the campaign, Trevor photographed portraits of wife and studio manager, Issa Dixon, as a “Face of Choice.”

40 Faces of Choice

We love the creative and exciting work that women are producing globally, and look forward to seeing continual efforts to create recognition and awareness of equality for all people everywhere. To read more about International Women’s Day’s history and mission, visit their website.

Trevor Dixon Shoots Urban Outfitters’ Home Lookbook

We’re excited to announce the release of Trevor Dixon‘s work for Urban Outfitter’s First Home Lookbook! The three day shoot took place in early January, making it a wonderful and exciting start to 2013. The project involved the collaborative efforts of Trevor, Urban Outfitters’ Director of Digital Media John Osborne, Stylist Amy Chin, and the Dixon Photography Team. The photographs were taken at Dixon Studios and an on location at an apartment in Philadelphia. The following are some highlights from the campaign’s Plum & Bow and Magical Thinking brands.

Trevor Dixon - Urban Outfitters

The concept behind the shoot was to create a set and atmosphere that highlights the Urban Outfitters’ brands Plum & Bow and Magical Thinking. Stylist Amy Chin did an amazing job in supplying props and styling the set’s decor. We had the chance to ask her about her experience working on the shoot, and she offered us her inside view on the creative aspects. Amy shared that both of the featured brands “are edgy and feminine, but in very different ways, which I think really exemplifies the Urban brand as a wholeBeing on set was like putting together a puzzle and making a collage at the same time.” The first brand “Magical Thinking” is shown in the first two images seen here, and are appropriately described by Urban Outfitters as “Global mixed with rock & roll hippie”.

Trevor Dixon - Urban Outfitters

The following shots were photographed for the Urban Outfitters Plum & Bow brand. Plum & Bow is described as Urban’s “naive with an edge” brand, and incorporates floral and critter elements to offer a youthful, yet introspectively mature feel. Amy utilized a lot of natural elements to effectively convey both brands appropriately, and shared that her selections included pieces like air plants, cactuses, driftwood, and vintage pieces. Amy said,  “We really wanted a layered and lived in look; so along with the big picture, the little details, tiny nooks and corners all needed to be considered and thoughtful.”

Trevor Dixon - Urban Outfitters

Trevor Dixon - Urban Outfitters

We love the photographs Trevor captured for the campaign. The different lighting setups and compositions beautifully compliment the tones of the Plum & Bow and Magical Thinking brands. It’s wonderful to see such a large and exciting project rise to completion, and we’re looking forward to future collaborations with Amy Chin and Urban Outfitters.

Marketing Your Work Through Dialogue

A couple of weeks ago, Glasshouse Photographer Ryan Pfluger teamed up with Apple to host a talk about his body of work. The event had a great turnout and we were thrilled to have Ryan share with others some insight on his work and process. Both Apple and Glasshouse promoted for the event through social media, personalized emails, postings at the store, etc. While I thought there would be a good-size crowd in attendance, I had no idea that we would receive the sort of feedback that we did. Not only was there a great attendance, but even photo editors and directors who couldn’t make it took the time to personally email and rave about the event. It was humbling to see so many people excited to hear Ryan’s insight on his work!

It seems as though personal connection is one of the key elements to establishing a presence in the photo industry. Mailings, emails, blog posts, and other forms of social media are a huge way to start those connections, and should be important components in a photographer’s workflow. However, I do think it’s worth it for photographers to explore additional avenues. Each photographer is different, so whether it’s opportunities such as a talk, presentation, interview, demonstration, etc., it’s important to make themselves accessible to their audience in a way that compliments their personality. These avenues allow people to hear a photographer share about his or her work, experience, and process, which can add a completely new dimension to the photographs. The audience at the Apple talk seemed to be a mix of both community members and photo professionals, of both aspiring and seasoned photographers; however, even with the diverse mix, questions asked at the end seemed to be garnered toward hearing more about Ryan’s thought process.

Cat Power for TIME
Cat Power for TIME

When I asked Ryan why he particularly enjoys having discussions and lectures with his audience, he said, “Having a dialogue is always a good thing, especially when you can inspire, mentor or advise. I think as an artist it’s important to make yourself accessible to people in many different avenues, whether it be a public talk, a critique at an art school or even a blog post about your experiences and work.” Ryan certainly has a gift of sharing his thoughts and advice with his audience. He has a large tumblr following, and posts updates daily. While every photographer has their own way of reaching out to the community, it’s evident that offering wisdom and experience is the natural dialog platform for Ryan.

Real Simple

Ryan: “For me it definitely comes naturally because it’s what I’m most passionate about.  Being a mentor is something I really believe in, because when I was younger I didn’t have that many people that were accessible to me.  I was on the cusp of the internet boom, so even then it was much more difficult to just search out for your peers or artists presently making work that you related to.  Connecting is not something you can teach, nor is something that everyone wants to do.  For me, it’s not something I have to work at.  I’m honest about myself, my past, my work and everything in between.  My personality is just another aspect of my work and why I make it. Connecting has been something that has been hard for me in social circles, and photography became my starting ground…it’s the voice I was looking for and has allowed me to share who I am and what’s important to me.”

Studio Boys
Studio Boys

Additionally, the event offered something new and unexpected for Ryan’s team. As photo reps, we continually aim to know and understand our photographers on a deeper level, because we are their spokesperson to the clients. When we present their books at portfolio meetings, we are the ones sharing insight on their work, aesthetic and personality. For us, hearing Ryan speak about his photographic goals and purpose helped reveal another element of Ryan and his work. While we know Ryan well, and view his work everyday, the event allowed us to understand him as both a person and photographer a little more. After the talk, I spoke with Ryan’s studio manager and fellow photographer, Eric Helgas, and it was interesting to hear him feel a similar way. “Seeing Ryan speak in public is a way for me to gain more insight about his work in a formal way. As his studio manager, learning about Ryan’s work through artist lectures helps me to be able to talk about his work to others, which I think is extremely important.” Eric also shared more about his thoughts on photographers being accessible to their clients and audience. He said, “I also think making yourself and your work accessible to the public is also necessary when marketing yourself. It helps people understand your methods of working and allows anyone to gain insight on a first hand basis.”
